According to Rafael Chacón, the director of the Ministry
of Education and Sports Autonomous Institutes, both regular
and acting teachers, rather than refusing, have expressed their
support to the proposal made by the ministry to replace the
current method of incorporation with a fairer one in the absence
of crony relations or political affiliations, as in the past.
"Teachers think otherwise. We have traveled throughout the
nation with this bill and both acting and regular teachers favor
this proposal," he pointed out, and ruled out possible indoctrination
during an interview with TV channel RCTV.
In his view, the "reeducation" proposed aims at fitting teachers
into the reality under the Bolivarian Constitution. "Presently,
curricula in education colleges and universities are out of
range. These programs should be updated."
The official dismissed the claims of Cuban influence in Venezuelan
education, and explained that the government proposal intends
to replace the current method of incorporation with a fairer
one in the absence of crony relations or political affiliations,
as in the past. He noted that from now on, the whole educational
community would take an active part to assess teachers' performance.
Chacón emphasized on performance assessment, where "social
commitment, pedagogical development, teachers' accountability
to students will prevail. This is not a Cuban-like procedure.
Just teachers' abilities are being considered, their efficiency
and effectiveness in the work place."
