"Of course we are going to control non-governmental organizations (ONGs). We will do it because that is what the people are asking. In doing so, we are to meet the people's expectations of social justice regarding many issues left unsolved in the past," said ruling party MVR lawmaker Iris Varela in connection with a draft international cooperation law the Venezuelan Parliament is considering for approval.

Varela, a member of the National Assembly Foreign Policy Committee, added: "We have to control the activities of a group of organizations that are using a façade of NGO and human rights advocates, while they get funds from the United States for political purposes and for plotting against the Government" of President Hugo Chávez.
