Government rules out agriculture for export

Venezuelan land policy is not aimed at production for potential export. Instead, a model has been set out to meet the needs in the domestic market, Minister of Agriculture and Lanas Elías Jaua said.

"We will sell any surplus, making it clear that agricultural exports do not account for our agrarian model," he added.

Based on such concept of agricultural activity, "we are not afraid of entering Mercosur, because we are certain that we will go together with Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. Their production does not affect us. It just because they have items that are not cultivated sufficiently or will be never developed here, such as meat, milk, wheat or soy."

In his view, Venezuela will find a niche in Argentinean and Uruguayan markets with competitive items, such as coffee, cacao, rice and some fruits. Also, the Government plans to delve into trade of coffee and sugar with Brazil.
