Minister: "Trying to impose Catholic teaching is anti-democratic"

Under the Venezuelan Constitution, teaching has no race, ideology or religion, People's Power Minister of Education Adán Chávez reminded, adding that "while talking about democracy, Catholic leaders are trying to impose Catholic teaching in Venezuela at all levels of education. This runs counter to democracy. In Venezuela there is freedom of cult. Therefore, education must be laic, as established under the Constitution."

Chávez -brother of President Hugo Chávez- stressed that the Venezuelan government respects all beliefs. "This is precisely where families play a major role," the official told TV show En Confianza on the official TV station VTV.

The Minister of Education added that the government cannot force the children who are not Catholic to attend mandatory Catholic classes.
