The third driving force of President Hugo Chávez' revolution
will be activated Wednesday with launching of formation workshops
for brigade members and advertisements in the media.
People's Power Minister of Education Adán Chávez
-a brother of the Venezuelan ruler- stressed that the campaign
"Morals and Enlightenment" is aimed at transforming the curriculum
of Venezuelan education, as well as the integral training
of teachers.
Amidst uncertainty regarding a reform of the laws governing
education, particularly in connection with likely indoctrination
at schools, the official said: "We should not be afraid of
changes in the curriculum. We intend to instill values of
equality, unity and solidarity in Venezuelan education."
As to claims that Venezuelan education would be "Cuba-styled",
Chávez replied: "We must be genuine and not copy anyone.
We seek integration and respect the specifics. We are building
an education model of our own," he told the official news
agency ABN.
Replying to persistent rumors, Chávez assured that private
education would not be eradicated in Venezuela. "We are launching
a process under which education in private institutions will
have to include a significant socialist content, as established
under the Constitution. We are also calling for respect for
all religions, and this is the reason why education must continue
to be laic."
